This will be my first time visiting Oregon, and only my second time on the west coast. I’m expecting lots of good hipster carspotting, so follow me on Instagram (

) to see those live. Don’t worry, pictures only, no streaming. I know my friend who I’m staying with has an “old Volvo wagon” of some sort, because Portland, so we’ll see what that entails. Also, in addition to seeing the Spruce Goose, I’ll be swinging by the Portland Art Museum to check out

, a temporary exhibit on streamlined cars. If you’ve got any other suggestions for things to do, let me know, although I’m sure my host will largely have that covered.
Update: the Old Volvo Wagon in question is this ‘95 Volvo 850 wagon in “Pacific Fog Grey” with over 200k miles on the clock. Still runs as smooth as silk, and the seats are super comfortable.
Also, a full photodump of cars & scenery will be coming, but for now here’s the view from our rental apartment in Oceanside (OR not CA):

I absolutely love that Volvo. And the color is exquisite.

Hey! Yup, I love all the old Land Rovers and such you post.

The spruce goose is cool - they have an SR-71 down there too. Don’t miss Voodoo donuts. Both the Japanese and Chinese gardens are beautiful there as well.

The gardens are on my must-do list. Voodoo too. As for the SR-71, of course that’s cool, but we’ve got one at a museum near me that I’ve seen many, many times. Plus the one at the Smithsonian. Still cool though.

That red is gorgeous too, but I’ve always thought the world needs more green cars.

When you’re in McMinnville be sure to walk across the parking lot to the space museum. It’s almost more fun than the aviation museum.

Automotive/Oppoy stuff or cool stuff to do in general? I’ve lived there most of my life and even when not spend a lot of time there(parents and all my closest friends are there). Would suggest meeting up but currently live up in Bellingham, WA

Either one!

Be ready for crazy lines at Pok Pok. Sunday afternoons have been really quiet there though I’ve noticed. Also Little Beast Brewing just down the street is really good.

The local Cars & Coffee is Saturday mornings at World of Speed (which is a pretty cool automotive museum in itself) about 20 mins south of town just off I-5, pretty cool if you’re looking for more car things.
It’s really hot out here right now, so be warned (high 90s, low 100s), should be cooling down for the weekend I think.

I was there last weekend for a bachelor party. If you like steak, try the Acropolis Steakhouse.

Eat at Pine state biscuits!

The Whiskey Soda place across the street is owned by the same people and serves the same menu. Pok Pok was too busy so we went there, no wait at all.
![]() 07/25/2018 at 17:47 |

Long wait, but so damn good. Ordering something other than a Reggie takes even longer.

Too poor and not into strip clubs

All the hipsters ride bikes and drive Prii. The hippies, crust punks, and overtly wealthy on the other hand...

You’re not missing much. It’s a cheap cut of meat.

If you wanna do Voodoo go to the one on the East side (16th & Davis) during the daytime. Usually much less of a line, and it’s where they get made so they’re marginally fresher.
The main things to do in Portland are to go to the nearby natural splendor , eat way too much food and drink way too much beer, and go downtown to the largest independent bookstore in the US (it’s a whole city block): Powell’s Books .

Blue star is better than voodoo. Get salt and straw ice cream, but buy pints from the freezer so you don’t have to wait in line. World of speed museum. And if I would’ve seen this post sooner I would’ve mentioned the Oregon Brewer’s festival on the waterfront, but that ended yesterday. Haystack rock, especially if you like the Goonies. And Astoria, again if you like the Goonies and have the time. OMSI. Timberline, which is beautiful, historic, and they have amazing food.
How long are you in town?
![]() 07/30/2018 at 10:30 |

I’ve stayed in Oceanside... You’re just below the place I stayed in...
Visit the cheese factory on the way back.

I am consistently underwhelmed by Voodoo. They are so widely talked about up here, but they’re little more than weird things done with grocery store grade donuts. I wouldn’t wait in the line at the Portland location for one, that’s for sure. It’s nothing more than a tourist trap, imho.
Then again, I grew up on the country’s best donuts, so all donuts up here are underwhelming to me.

I recommend driving the Historic Columbia River Highway while you’re there. Better than the highway itself and a fun drive.

In town thru Wednesday, which is also my free day. Did Voodoo, Salt & Straw, Haystack Rock, & Astoria already. May do WoS on Wednesday. May have check out Timberline.

Timberline is worth a visit more than a lot of other places you've already been. Not saying they're not good, but timberline is awesome. Aside from being beautiful and historic, it was also used in "the shining". And It's where my favorite mountain bike trail starts.

Just checked, probably not gonna make it that far this time. I’ll put it in the list for my return visit.

Yeah it's a little out of the way and worth spending at least half a day there. What brings you to town?
